Things to do in and around Callander
Difficult to know where to start as there is so much in the surrounding area.
There is a box folder in the bookcase next to the kitchen with lots of brochures for you to peruse at your leisure. I would recommend that you take your time to look through these as there is such a wide selection of activities for all ages.
Callander is situated in the middle of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park with opportunities for many outdoor adventures.
Cycling and walking routes are all around. The NCN7 cuts through the local park and can either take you to Strathyre (10miles), Balquidder (12miles) or up to Killin. In the other direction it takes you to Aberfoyle. You can also find routes to Loch Venachar and Loch Katrine
At the other end of Callander there is the walk to the Bracklinn falls and Callander golf club.
Bikes can be hired locally in Callander (signposted off main St) or at Katrine Wheelz (see brochures)
Blair Drummond Safari Park and Briarlands farm park (good for young children) are less than 15 mins away. There is everything from birds of prey trails to jeep safaris to cruises and boat trips to Inchmahome Island to Go Ape and much, much more. The main street has a selection of local shops and cafes and has a thriving artist community. Creative in Callander is a cooperative shop which showcases many local artists, including Lynne and Jim from next door. There is also Galleria Luti opposite the main square and the Scottish Art and Antique Centre at Doune for some serious browsing and which also has a nice café/restaurant. The café does not have a children’s menu but the staff are more than happy to provide sandwiches, plainer versions of the menu and will attempt to accommodate any requests.
On rainy days the Maclaren Centre has a good swimming pool which is very child friendly, a small soft play and café. There is also an indoor climbing wall and instruction can be booked.
The local craft shop (Kokosnoot) has lots of kits which are ideal for occupying young children and we are more than happy for you to make full use of the craft items in the house. The only request is that painting is confined to the kitchen table or outside. Children are more than welcome to use the kits on the bookcase and to take their creations home.
There is also a play room downstairs, mainly set out for younger children but which can also be used for "quiet time".
Places to Eat
The many cafes in and around Callander tend to use local produce and are reasonable and child friendly. The Deli up from the church in the main square does some mean cakes and has a nice wood burner to sit around. There is also a nice coffee shop on the corner at the main lights, Crafted Merchant, which has some local artwork for sale. For pub grub, The Crown is probably best and The Waverly is pretty good. Some of the pubs and hotels in the town allow dogs. Fish and chips from Mhor are cooked to order and are our favourite but there are another couple in the town and all are good. The Mhor bakery is also good for breads and cakes and does good pies and sandwiches to eat in or take away. For fine dining, Poppies just opposite is very good as is The Meadows in town. The Riverside Inn Chinese does carry out although it doesn’t deliver. For Indian, the only take away is Spice Delight in the main Street.
